Frequently asked questions
How do you add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate and add it on. For example, a $100 price with 20% VAT becomes $120, with $20 of VAT.
How do you remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate. For example, $120 with 20% VAT gives a net price of $100 and $20 of VAT. Note that removing 20% VAT is not the same as subtracting 20% of $120.
What is the difference between VAT and GST?
They are the same idea with different names: a consumption tax added at each stage of sale. The UK and EU call it VAT, while countries like India, Australia, and Canada call it GST or HST.
