Frequently asked questions
What is straight-line depreciation?
The asset loses the same amount of value every year: (cost minus salvage value) divided by useful life. It is the simplest method and the most common for accounting.
What is double-declining balance depreciation?
The asset loses value faster in early years. Each year you depreciate twice the straight-line rate applied to the current book value. It never depreciates below the salvage value.
What is salvage value?
The estimated value of the asset at the end of its useful life — what you could sell it for when you are done with it. Depreciation stops once book value reaches salvage value.
